We at Vascular Specialist International (VSI) are proud to present the VSI 2023 Annual Report. This document encapsulates the journal’s significant achievements, milestones, and strides made in the field of vascular surgery over the past year. We observed a notable doubling in the annual submission rate to VSI in 2023 compared to 2022, an indicator of the journal’s growing influence and reach in the academic community. In this review, we reflect on the accomplishments, challenges, and transformative changes VSI experienced in 2023.
We would like to reiterate our sincere appreciation to all contributors who have played a pivotal role in the growth and success of VSI. We also extend our gratitude to the VSI Editorial Board and the Korean Society of Vascular Surgery for their unwavering support, which has been fundamental to our success. We remain dedicated to publishing high-quality research in vascular surgery and continue our efforts towards enhancing healthcare.

1. REVIEWER AWARDS FOR 2023

A robust peer-review process is essential to ensure the credibility of any scientific journal. The Reviewer Award, presented annually, recognizes the top reviewers for their exceptional peer review contributions. This year, we have seen a wide array of insightful, constructive, and timely reviews that have substantially elevated the quality of our publications. We are deeply appreciative of the dedication and expertise our reviewers bring to the journal.

2. NEW JOURNAL FEATURES

  • Graphical Abstracts: In an effort to enhance the visualization and dissemination of research, original articles in VSI are now accompanied by graphical abstracts. These concise and informative visuals succinctly encapsulate the main findings, facilitating a quicker understanding and wider reach of the research.
  • Author Citation Alerts: As part of our commitment to supporting our authors, VSI has implemented a new feature where authors are promptly notified when their work is cited in other scholarly papers, thereby keeping them informed of the impact and reach of their research.

3. FIRST IMPACT SCORE

Following our indexing in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) in 2022, the first JCR (Journal Citation ReportsTM) impact score was calculated this year. We are pleased to announce that our journal’s current impact factor is 0.9 and the average number of citations received over the past two years is 0.74. We are steadfast in our commitment to enhancing the quality and impact of our publications and anticipate further improvements in these metrics.

4. FOCUSED SESSION ON PEER REVIEW

During the 77th Congress of the Korean Society for Vascular Surgery on June 6th, 2023, VSI editors conducted an educational program for journal editors and reviewers. This educational event featured presentations from five distinguished experts. The topics covered included conducting peer reviews using reporting guidelines, the art of crafting peer review reports, ethical issues in the peer review process, frequent statistical mistakes and misunderstandings in scholarly articles, and approaches to securing inclusion of a journal in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE).

5. ANNUAL DATA REPORT: PUBLICATIONS

In 2023, VSI published 41 citable articles and 1 non-citable article. Notably, there was a significant increase in the number of review papers published, covering diverse areas of vascular surgery. These included topics such as the treatment of ectopic variceal bleeding due to extrahepatic portal vein occlusion, technical tips for suprahepatic vena cava tumor thrombectomy during renal cell carcinoma surgery, diagnosis and management of endograft infections, hypersensitivity after cyanoacrylate closure of varicose veins, and novel interventional therapies for lymphatic leakage disorders.
